The Kentucky Derby is this weekend and while I like the thought of a mint julep, sometimes it’s just a little too strong for me. Last year for the Derby, my mom and I made traditional mint juleps served in, but of course, her mint julep cups (from Savannah – no less!). We sipped them and watched the Derby and by the end of my drink I think it was nap time for me. So this year I decided to do a bourbon and tangerine cocktail – the perfect twist.
My parents are still visiting and since my mom has been on a little bit of a Manhattan kick lately I have bourbon in my house. I wanted to do something that would be festive but not quite as strong as a mint julep. So, I ran into Whole Foods (I think I should just move in?) and grabbed a couple of pixie tangerines. I had never heard of them and neither had my cashier; he said they were brand new and this was the first shipment of them in. Pixie tangerines are small, sweet, and absolutely delicious and they pair so well with the bourbon. I added a bit of meyer lemon juice into the mix and I came up with a refreshing cocktail that tastes like liquid candy. This is a must try.
Bourbon and Tangerine Cocktail
2 oz bourbon
1 1/2 oz pixie tangerine juice
1/2 oz meyer lemon juice
In a cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients. Shake vigorously. Strain into an old fashioned glass over ice. Serve with a slice of tangerine.
My mind is blown. I love tangerines, I have pushed people out of my way for clementines, and now you are telling me there is an even smaller, juicier variety?!? I must have these and make this drink! Also, is that a big, round ball of ice? Is it true they don’t water down your drink as fast as regular ice cubes?
Yes!! You MUST try them! They are the best tangerines I have ever tasted. I only got a couple and have inhaled all of them already…eating some as we speak for a snack! I am going back to the store and buying as many as I can – they are THAT good. And the best part is that they peel so easily and are seedless. LOVE them! And about the ice cubes, yes! I got 2 of those sphere molds and they are always in my freezer – so much better for not watering down drinks…by the time I’m done with my drink more than half of the sphere is still there and hasn’t melted which is great. They are one of the best purchases if you like cocktails! (or if you just hate how a watered down any kind of drink tastes :))
